The olfactograph traps its odors in capsules of cloth and silica gel. Air is drawn into the main tube from the target environment with a computer fan. A condensation chamber uses compressed flourocarbons to draw moisture out of the air, and along with it many of the odor causing particles. The moisture is absorbed by the silica gel and the scent remains trapped in the cloth and silica beads. Because the capsule is dehydrated by the silica gel, most odors are effectively preserved once the capsule is sealed.

the olfactograph is a machine that captures smells. When it is activated near an odiferous object or room, it records the smell into a capsule sealed for future smellings. The odors are then paired with binuaral sound recordings, which provide three dimensional sound impressions of the spaces.
